THE MUSIC OF SRI CHINMOY
A 42-Year Odyssey:
Record 13,000 Songs Composed
Culminating a 42-year musical
odyssey, 75-year-old world harmony leader and musical maestro Sri Chinmoy
composed and sang his 13,000th song in his native Bengali at the Great Kamakura
Buddha in Japan.
In addition to the 13,000 songs
in his native tongue — itself a record — Sri Chinmoy has composed and performed
the music and lyrics to over 7,000 songs in English and to nearly 100 in other
languages, an average of 40 songs per month for the past 42 years!
While most of the songs were
composed in New York City, where Sri Chinmoy resides, several thousand were
composed in the 40-plus countries he has visited.
At the completion of his
monumental achievement, Sri Chinmoy said, “My 13,000 heart-flower-songs in
Bengali, my Mother-tongue, I am offering to all the soulful singers of the
world, born and yet unborn. My gratitude-heart I am prayerfully offering to the
Vision-Eye, Compassion-Heart and Protection-Feet of my Absolute Lord Beloved
Supreme.”
Bengali is spoken by over 250
million people (sixth in the world) and has a rich tradition of literature and
music. Rabindranath Tagore, who received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature,
wrote mainly in Bengali and composed 2,800 Bengali songs. Sri Chinmoy’s Bengali
compositions have been aired on over 100 radio stations across America in the
last two years.
The Indian Limca Book of Records includes Sri Chinmoy as the world’s most
prolific musical composer of all time. Legendary composer and conductor Leonard
Bernstein commented on Sri Chinmoy’s music by saying, “Sri Chinmoy is a
miraculous model of the abundance in the creative life, and I can only hope
that I may someday participate in that cosmic fountain of stillness and
profound energy which he inhabits.”
Sri Chinmoy has performed his
musical compositions at the world’s great concert halls, including New York’s
Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Moscow’s Russia
Hall, Tokyo’s Budokan Hall, and the Sydney Opera House.
Sri Chinmoy just completed a
series of concerts in Japan, including at the Great Buddha at Kamakura, at
Hiroshima Peace Park and at Mt. Fuji. Sri Chinmoy will perform at New York’s
Riverside Church on July 27th and in Nashville, Tennessee on July 28th.
